Belts and hoses are important because they power many of the features throughout your vehicle. Hoses provide hydraulic pressure for the brakes and some of the other components. Belts serves to transfer energy directly from the crankshaft to the moving components that steer, start, cool and heat the vehicle. Additionally, the belts and hoses keep the engine cranking properly. When a belt becomes loose or a hose leaks, it can have an impact upon the performance of the part. A fully broken hose or belt can completely disable a vehicle.

Here are a few signs that it’s time to schedule service for your car’s belts and hoses:
- Squealing and chirping sounds. These telltale sounds could be the result of a damaged or loose belt. Or, the sounds could be due to fluid or oil leakage.
- Loose belts. In this case, the belt will probably need replacement unless it is a serpentine belt, which need adjustments periodically.
- Visible hose or belt wear. The belts should be clear of rust, cracks or damage. The hoses and their connections should secure and free of holes.
- Fluid leaks around a hose or underneath your vehicle.
- Problems with the battery. Your vehicle does not start up, the battery warning light goes on or the interior lights are dim. This could indicate a problem with the alternator belt.
- Engine troubles. Seeing metal shavings within your motor oil? Or, does the engine misfire a lot? The timing belt might need service.
